I have been very busy in the studio creating for our busy tourist season. At a wonderful venture initiated by a local Council, Burnie Makers Workshop, I am fortunate to have been selected as a participating artist. I am there as a watercolourist and silk painter. We “Makers” give our time, on a rostered basis, to sit and demonstrate our art/craft to visitors and to chat with them. Cruise ship visit days are especially busy. I do love it.
There is an associated shop and we are able to leave some items for sale in the gift shop area and on the days we attend we can bring in, and set up, a bigger display. I usually demonstrate painting on silk, small paintings which I later put into cards, frames or various jewellery settings.
People who are unfamiliar with silk painting enjoy seeing a different art medium being used and those familiar with silk painting are often intrigued with my preference for a watercolour technique using no resist or antidiffusant of any type. I love the flow of the dyes and the serendipitous aspect of the way the paintings evolve. No two are ever the same. I had been painting for days at MW when it was time to post my final artists’ challenge day so silk painting was a natural choice.

I was given some iris flowers from a friend and last night managed a watercolour before they died… just a few flowers and buds left but enough to capture their “personality”. The big, soft, droopy petals make me think of dogs’ ears…. only more colourful. I have “manufactured” my own colour combinations, as is permitted of an artist if not working rigidly in a botanical illustration manner. However, no one would doubt these are iris. I do hope you agree that I have captured the essence of the elegant, garden favourites.
I did a little light, compositional drawing, but primarily employed freehand painting in a brush painting style on a very unforgiving, smooth, lightweight (120 gsm) Fabriano drawing paper. Challenging, but what a fresh finish it yields.I deliberately chose the paper to ensure I did not go back and “fix” anything…. no overpainting as the soft surface cannot handle that.
I do so love the brush painting style, with the variation of pressure and pulling a twisting a multi-loaded soft brush across the paper surface. Pure meditation!
Those who follow my facebook page, Evelyn Antonysen at Forth Art Studio, will be aware that I am currently preparing for an exhibition of works on birds, “Wings”, to open mid-December. I have been posting some photos on my fb page but will also share them here. My initial degree was Science based asIi trained to be a Maths/Science teacher so scientific illustration has always been an interest. I love the careful observation and rendering but it art I also love freedom to go beyond accurate recording…. more of that looser style later. Most importantly, whatever style of presenting the image is adopted, the personality of the creature must be captured.

The most tricky of these 3 paintings was the wren as it’s form is not readily recognisable. Interesting I feel it is the one which captures the animal’s “personality” best…. perhaps because I watch them so much…. very entertaining and the males are so vain.
These are some of the works done at a one day workshop in Canberra today. The ladies had not done watercolour before and I was so impressed with what they achieved in this single session. We worked with a limited palette, primarily on Fabriano torchon extra rough paper so they could explore different textures. Some of the textures were created using a palette knife while othere were using traditional watercolour methods such as dry brush.
They responded well to the use of and appreciation of a variety of brush types …. one inch hake, goat hair
a small taklon rigger,
a number 3 squirrel teardrop wash
and a taklon or sablon half inch flat or angle shader
Back to silk painting today up at Burnie Makers’ workshop. It is winter time, so mists are creeping into my paintings. It is interesting how the weather conditions of the day often unconsciously find their way into my work.
