It felt cold enough to be snowing today… perhaps that feeling is what influenced our choice of stimulus for Zen style watercolours using Winsor Red, Cyan and Ultramarine Deep on Saunders Waterford paper. Painting the atmosphere first and sprinkling while damp with a little salt to suggest snowflakes. A few suggestions of things in the scene then all left to dry. Paper turned to decide which way it should progress then rewet and more subtle shapes added to diffuse into the distance. Bringing everything forward then by adding increasingly drier paint on drier paper. The final crisp embellishments are added onto a thoroughly dry surface so the darks remain dark. A little sumi ink and a spattering of gouache (more snow) using a toothbrush. Fini!
